What is the 1st generation mechanical grounding?

The 1st generation mechanical grounding began with Franklin’s lightning rod experiment using a kite, and lightning rods were installed, and lightning protection down-conductor was connected to ground electrode to prevent physical/mechanical damage due to direct lightning on buildings, equipment, human and animals.
